Signature Buffalo Grass Program
(This program is a 5 step program)
1st application (Spring)
This application is the foundation of a weed free buffalo grass lawn. This application cleans up weeds that have already sprouted in early spring and also includes two kinds of preemergent herbicides. This prevents both grassy weeds (such as sandburs) and broadleaf weeds (such as pigweed, kochia, thistle, and goatheads) from germinating.
Timing: This application depends on the spring temperatures but typically is made between late February and early April
Spring Buffalo Grass App.(This includes a weed killer and 2 pre-emergents for broadleaf & grassy weeds.)
Care Instructions: For best results, wait 24 hrs., then incorporate with 1/2" - 1" of water within 4 weeks of the application or before mowing.
2nd application (Sandbur Pre-emerge)
SANDBURS!!! There is not enough bad to be said about sandburs!! Sandburs germinate throughout the summer. The pre-emerge chemicals in the spring buffalo grass spraying do not last long enough to prevent sandburs from germinating all summer. In this application we apply a grassy weed pre-emergent that works especially well on sandbur. This extends your sandbur control into late summer.
Timing: 6-8 weeks after spring buffalo grass spraying
Care Instructions: For best results, wait 24 hrs., then incorporate with 1/2" - 1" of water within 2 weeks of the application or before mowing.
3rd application (Chinch Bug)
The timing of this application coincides with the Sandbur Pre-emerge application and is typically applied in the same tank mix. Because chinch bug can have multiple generations per season it is sometimes necessary to do additional applications later in the summer.
A little about chinch bug….
Chinch bugs over winter as eggs, hatch in spring and start feeding when temps begin to warm. The first signs of damage from chinch bugs are often mistaken for ‘dry spots’ as the buffalo grass greens up in the spring. Buffalo grass doesn’t always green up evenly, but if you have definite patches that are not greening up, you may want to take a closer look. If left untreated chinch bugs can turn a beautiful buffalo grass lawn into blowing dirt in one summer. It leaves room for weeds to grow also!
Timing: 6-8 weeks after spring buffalo grass spraying, although multiple applications may be needed.
Care Instructions: No irrigation necessary. If possible, it is best if the grass has been mowed short prior to the application.
4th application (Sandbur Post-emerge (killer))
This application may be needed in yards with high sandbur pressure. Due to sandbur having a long germination period, pre-emerge applications may not be sufficient to completely control sandbur. This herbicide will kill actively growing sandbur without damaging buffalo grass.
Timing: Mid to late summer
Care Instructions: No irrigation needed. For best results, wait 24 hrs. to mow or irrigate.
5th application (Fall)
This application targets a different set of weeds called cool season weeds (dandelions, henbit, clover, etc.) than the spring. Cool season weeds germinate early fall and live through the winter to become mature weeds next spring. If not killed before winter these weeds become very difficult to kill in the spring.
Timing: October- November
Care Instructions: For best results, wait 24 hrs., then incorporate with 1/2" - 1" of water within 4 weeks of the application or before mowing.
Other applications:
Bindweed
Bindweed is one of the most persistent weeds out there! If left unchecked it will, within a few years, take over and ruin what was a beautiful lawn and yard. If you have bindweed taking over your yard, don’t despair! With consistent applications, and correct timing we are able to eradicate bindweed.
